“Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland and a favorite of the unmarried King, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, she wants to open a shop and create delectable pastries. But for her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for a woman who could be a queen.

At a royal ball where Cath is expected to receive the King’s marriage proposal, she meets handsome and mysterious Jest. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the King and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into a secret courtship.

Cath is determined to choose her own destiny. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.” -Goodreads

Review:

“But hoping,” he said, “is how the impossible can be possible after all.”

Painful, tearjerking, and beautiful. How else could I ever describe this book?

This book has become one of my new favorite books and I have now decided that the Lunar Chronicles is now one of my top priorities. As I regrettably say about every really good book, I don’t know what to say about this book. This book was absolutely heartbreaking.

During the time I was reading this book I read some comments about it on other peoples Instagram’s and they all said this story was heart breaking. Most books have sort of obvious endings but this one was such an open story that literally anything and when I say anything I mean ANYTHING could happen. I mean there were so many different possibilities; they were endless. I was like terrified while reading because I didn’t know how this beautiful cute story could turn into a heart breaking story. but it did and my heart is still shattered by the end.

“Sometimes your heart is the only thing worth listening to.”

Anyways, the story is beautifully written. I had to stop and take in how beautifully it was written. I mean on the first page there was so many details about just a few tarts. I mean this story had the most amazing detail. Also, the plot line was fantastic. I never saw where it was going. I never read soemthing I didnt like, I mean other than all the heartbreaking stuff but even that was amazing writing. The story was a mastepiece. I would love to meet and give Meyers a hug and then maybe a swift punch in the stomach for hurting me so badly (just kidding becuase violence solves nothing kids). Actually, this is probably what I would say if I saw Meyers:

Hehe, I’m so punny…

Cath is one of my new all time favorite characters. I think I saw that about every book character I read about but it is so true. Cathrine is this kind of chaaracter who I dont know if I really should like. I mean with the ending it makes me feel like she shouldnt be one of my favorites but she was so kind and sweet and I felt like I related to her so much. I mean obviously not of the social status I mean I am not a part of the gentry or anything but just some of her thoughts I felt like I could understand why she did that stuff and I would feel the same feelings she felt if I was in her situation. I think she is this really clever character and the enourmous change that occurs is astounding.

My other favorite character was Jest. Jest is the King of Hearts joker. I loved him at the beginning of the story. I loved him a little bit more in the middle. I loved him a whole lot by the end. He also broke my, heart. I cried over him and over Cath but mostly about him. I couldn’t believe what happened and how it happened. I just love Jest so much. They are absolutely the cutest couple in the world. I mean they were perfect, a magical delicious relationship.

“Fascinating, isn’t it, how often heroic and foolish turn out to be one and the same.”

I absolutely love this book. It is probably gonna end up on my top reads list of this year. I really want to buy it so I can re-read it a bunch of times. It was such a cute story. I love it so much. I am gonna end this review here because I cant say more about this book with out spoiling anything. I hope you enjoyed this review as much as I loved watching it.

  1. I love reading your reviews. You have talked me into putting this series on my list.

  2. Great review for this book, I’m so glad to see you loved it so much and that it’s making you want to pick up The Lunar Chronicles (which is an amazing series, if you enjoyed Heartless then you’ll love that series) as well. I definitely agree about all the possibilities this book has for Cath and Jest, even though I knew where this book would end (Cath is the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland so there’s only one way this book could end) I still hoped there’d be another story for her and this book did keep my guessing.
Oh I cried over Jest as well, that ending, all of the last few chapters, had me in tears pretty much.

    1. I was so sad. I knew where it would end up but it could have gone any way. I am glad you think that The Lunar Chronicles is great so I am definitely going to read that.
