How Should You Read Throne of Glass Read?

With the release of House of Flame and Shadow coming in January 2024, readers who love Sarah J. Maas are re-reading all of her works. I personally am reading all of her books chronologically of when she published them, starting with the Throne of Glass series.

It is a huge debate in the SJM fandom about which read order is best for Throne of Glass.

This is what I see most people say on TikTok:

  1. Assassin’s Blade
  2. Throne of Glass
  3. Crown of Midnight
  4. Heir of Fire
  5. Queen of Shadows
  6. Tandem: Empire of Storms and Tower of Dawn
  7. Kingdom of Ash

This is the way I read the stories originally, and another popular way to read the books:

  1. Throne of Glass
  2. Crown of Midnight
  3. Heir of Fire
  4. Assassin’s Blade (either before or after Heir of Fire)
  5. Queen of Shadows
  6. Empire of Storms
  7. Tower of Dawn (Most people still opt for the tandem read)
  8. Kingdom of Ash

Before starting this reading I was a die-hard you should not read Assassins Blade first. I have only read Assassin’s Blade once, as it broke my tiny 16-year-old heart. I read it after Heir of Fire because that is just when I so happened to acquire the novel.

Years later, the debate on TikTok arises where there is all this talk of where you should place Assassin’s Blade in the series. I thought back to my reading and I said if you read it before ToG, you would be spoiling the entire series for yourself. The series is called Throne of Glass, not Assassin’s Blade. I had all these little reasons.

So starting out my re-read I wanted to prove everyone wrong. I wanted to prove that Throne of Glass should be read first.

And I did just the opposite.

I began reading Throne of Glass and then read each short story as it was brought up. (Assassin’s Blade is made up of 5 novellas. 4 were published before Throne of Glass, and 1 was added when they published it as a book instead of just online.) The first and third stories were the only ones brought up as anecdotes. So I read the first three once the Skull’s Bay and Silent Assassins were mentioned.

I did not read the remaining two stories till the end of Throne of Glass, mostly because I was waiting for an overt allusion to the stories. I believe there was one that I missed, but it didn’t matter.

Once I finished Assassin’s Blade, I realized I was wrong. There actually were no spoilers, it just reads that way after you know the story and some of the endings of the first few books.

I officially converted.

I am a believer in reading Assasin’s Blade first. You don’t get any spoilers. You actually get to see Celeana’s badassery more in Assasin’s Blade than if you were to just read Throne of Glass. You get to understand some of the events in the first book more if you read the novellas first.

Officially I think Assassin’s Blade is the way to go.

Now, I do not believe in the tandem read of the 5th and 6th books and I probably will not budge on that. Maybe I will discuss that in another post.

Thank you for reading!

The Bookshelf Tag:

*DISCLAIMER I REORGANIZED MY BOOKSHELF AFTER DOING THIS BLOG AND THAT IS WHAT THE PICTURE IS BECAUSE I AM PROUD OF MY NEW SHELF. BUT THE CONTENTS ARE OF THE OLD SHELF SO JUST IGNORE EVERYTHING I SAY ABOUT TOP THREE SHELVES OR PLACEMENT OF MY BOOKS BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY IT CHANGED.

Describe your bookshelf (or wherever it is you keep your books-it doesn’t actually have to be a shelf!) and where you got it from:

My book shelf is white, tall, and has 5 shelves. I got it for Christmas so the exact location of the book shelf is lost on me but I am pretty sure my parents got it from Walmart.

Do you have any special or different way of organizing your books?

On my very top shelf I have my Harry Potter collection and a few of my favorite books. My next shelf has my hardcovers and then the next shelf my paperback. The bottom two shelves are all my other books I have had since childhood.

What’s the thickest (most amount of pages) book on your shelf?

Phew, I dont know. either a Harry Potter book by the queen J.K Rowling or Queen of Shadows by another queen, Sarah J. Maas.

What’s the thinnest (least amount of pages) book on your shelf?

Maybe Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur or House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros.

Is there a book you received as a birthday gift?

Recently for my birthday my best friend Maggie bought me her favorite book, The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. I am currently reading this book.

What’s the smallest (height and width wise) book on your shelf?

The book is my small version of To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

What’s the biggest (height and width wise) book on your shelf?

The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith (a.k.a J.K Rowling).

Is there a book from a friend on your shelf?

Refer to the birthday book question.

Most expensive book?

I have two (almost three) $300 books. They are collectors edition of, wait for it, Harry Potter books. They are the illustrated version but huge and has gold etching or whatever you call it on the cover. They are my prized possessions. I am getting the third one for Christmas. I hope they finish up the series because I would love to have the entire collection of these books.

The last book you read on your shelf?

I am currently reading the Secret Life of Bees. The last book I finished though was Gemina by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman.

Of all the books on your shelf, which was the first you read?

I first read my Harry Potter book if we are counting my top three shelves. My bottom shelves I couldn’t tell you. I have had those books as long as I can remember.

Do you have more than one copy of a book?

I just bought my second copy of TKAM but I will be getting rid of one of the copies because it is super tiny and the other one fits with my Go Set a Watchmen. I have a few extra copies of the Harry Potter books and the Twilight series. I may have more than that but those are the ones I can see from my desk position.

Do you have the complete series of any book series?

Harry Potter, Twilight, Beautiful Creatures, Doon, Fablehaven, Passenger*, Illuminae*, just to name a few.

*I have every book that is out so far.

What’s the newest addition to your shelf?

My newest addition is my new To Kill a Mockingbird and two other books I bought the other day from Barnes and Nobles, Wuthering Heights and Pride and Prejudice.

What book has been on your shelf FOREVER?

Well any of the books on my bottom two shelves but probably my Harry Potter books.

What’s the most recently published book on your shelf?

I want to say Wayfarer but at this point I have no clue.

The oldest book on your shelf (as in, the actual copy is old)?

No clue…

Maybe my Jane Eyre copy because it is ancient.

A book you won?

None…

I aint that lucky.

A book you’d hate to let out of your sight (aka a book you never let someone borrow)?

ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

I am only sort of joking. The ones I wouldn’t let out of site is probably my Harry Potter books.

Most beat up book?

I have a Canterwood Crest book on the bottom shelf. It was originally a library book but I took it to a horse show and it was raining and well…that was not a very good idea.

Most pristine book?

All the books I haven’t read like Wayfarer and The Diabolic. Also most Harry Potter books I got are good. I have one that is ripped in the corner.

A book from your childhood?

Any flipping book on my bottom shelf.

A book that’s not actually your book?

None

A book with a special/different cover (e.g. leather bound, soft fuzzy cover etc.)?

MY COLLECTORS EDITION OF HARRY POTTER!!!!!

A book that is your favorite color?

Shades of Doon is blue. It isn’t actually my favorite shade of blue but it is blue.

Book that’s been on your shelf the longest that you STILL haven’t read?

Many books but I do not know the longest.

Any signed books?

Heartless by Marissa Meyers

What book are you currently reading?

The Fever Code by James Dashner and Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas. technically I haven’t started Crown of Midnight yet but I am planning on starting tonight or tomorrow. The Fever Code I am enjoying. I kind of want to be finished with the MazeRunner series so I am kind of rushing through the story but I really like it so far.

What’s the last book you finished?

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. This story was fan-freakin-tastic. I loved it immensely. I am slowly writing my review for it but as soon as I get it up I will link it here. This was a fantastic read and I saw why so many people were freaking out about it. i cannot wait to read the others.

Favorite book you read this year?

How can I choose? Probably Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by JK Rowling, John Tiffany, and Jack Thorne or The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon. I Love love LOVED these books. I could rant for hours about these books but you should just go read my reviews of them. To read my review of The Sun is Also a Star click here. And for HP & the Cursed Child click here.

What genre have you read most this year?

I think Contemporary novels are what I have read mostly. These are a few of the contemporary (I think) books I read this year.

What genre have you read least this year?

Honestly, I have no clue what I have read least but I guess I read one memoir type book so nonfiction and tried to read others but I didn’t like the others. The one non-fiction book I read was Everyday Sexism by Laura Bates. It was amazing and opened my eyes to a lot of things about sexism. I think everyone all genders should read this story. The things people wrote in the book and the statistics shown really open your eyes to so many problems.

What genre do you want to read more of?

I want to read more fantasy books. this year I have mostly read contemporary novels or classic novels in school and I have just finished Throne of Glass so I want to read those books and then more stories by Maas and other fantasy authors.

How many books have you read this year, and what’s your goal?

My goal of books was originally 50 but then I lowered it to 30 half way through the year because at that point I had only read like 5 books because of how busy I was with school. I am currently at 35 books this year.

What’s the last book you bought?

Passenger by Alexandra Bracken. I ordered it like three days ago and as I said in my Book Buy of the Month of December, I love to spend money. I bought it because I want to read Wayfarer when it gets out and they both sound totally awesome. I am super excited for it to come in the mail.

What book are you saving up to buy next?

Can I say all of them? No, I’m just kidding but today in Target I saw Illuminae and Gemina by Anna Kaufman and Jay Kristoff and OH  MY GOSH THEIR COVERS WERE AMAZING. I like instantly fell in love and i would have bought them but I am gonna check out Half Price Books for them any cheaper. They were so beautiful and the top of my TBR list.

How many books did you check out last library visit?

I only checked out one book and that was The Fever Code by James Dashner which is my current read from up above. I usually only check out one or two.

What’s a book you can’t wait to read?

I cannot wait to read the Illuminae or Gemina by Anna Kaufman and Jay Kristoff as I said two questions ago. I also cannot wait to read Passenger and Wayfarer by Alexandra Bracken. I also can’t wait to start the Crown of Midnight by Sarah J Maas which I will start reading as soon as I am done with this post.

What’s a series you’d recommend to everyone?

A series I would recommend to everyone is the Harry Potter series. I mean duh. But other than HP I would recommend the Throne of Glass series to anyone. It is really great. I am having a great time reading them so far.

Who’s an author you’re hoping writes more?

I am hoping JK Rowling/Robert Galbraith write more because I absolutely love her. She has written my favorite series and she has written under Roberts name a fabulous mystery series, the Comoran Strike novels, which I am DYING for more. I also want JK Rowling to write more because I love how she writes and I would love for more Wizarding World stuff.

A few books your heart adores?

What series’ coming conclusion makes you sad?

I don’t really have an answer to this one. I know Wayfarer is the last of the series for Passenger but I haven’t read Passenger so I don’t know if I will be upset over it’s ending. Also, the sixth Throne of Glass book is coming and that sucks cause I am really liking this series so far.

What books are on your wish-list?

So many books

This is just a few:

This list goes on for miles so I am not going to bore you with any more of that list.
